The Phul Mahal; the Palace of Flowers was built early on in the eighteenth
century, and it’s as if all the exotic beauty of India was condensed
into this one exquisitely breathtaking room. From the gold ceiling with
it’s ornate floral design to the geometric Jali screens fitted with
stained glass…it’s the ultimate in oriental opulence. Not
surprisingly, the Phul Mahal is a room dedicated to the art of pleasure.
In the flickering glow of candlelight reflected from the mirrored ceiling,
poets recited lyrical verse, musicians played melodic ragas and dancers
danced till dawn… The frieze running beneath the cornice is decorated
with Ragmala paintings. Ragmala painting brings classical music and traditional
poetry to life in a visual form. The musical aspect of this creative triad
is known as Raga. Raga is a Sanskrit word which means color or passion.
Ragamala painting, poetry and musical ragas all conspire to color the
mind with deep emotion. This synthesis recognizes a spirituality fundamental
to all creative forms.
